 Alf Baldwin – Canada

– How long have you been cycling?

have been riding a bicycle since a child…many MANY years ago. However, as our own children got a bit older I started more regular cycling for pleasure. So, in answer, I really started cycling about 25 years ago.

– How did you get your taste for cycling?

I have never been a road cyclist. I only use vehicle travelled roads to get from one location to the next off road. I prefer trails and nature!

– What gives you the most satisfaction when you ride your bicycle?

Cycling with my wife Cecilia, meeting new friends on the road. When cycling barriers are broken, we speak one common language ”Cycling”. It does not matter what kind of bike one has, there is a bond that cyclist form when they come together, a warmth that makes you want to come back again and again. Besides meeting new friends, I get to discover new places, new roads. I get to reflect a lot while cycling.

– What beautiful part of your country would you like to show at the Bike4tourism event?

Kiambu county, the extensive tea fields and winding roads around the central highlands.

– Which city(ies) or country(ies) would you like to visit or would you like to get to know through the photos shared on May 30th?

Rift Valley here in Kenya, Netherlands, Australia, Mongolia, United Arab Emirates, and Rwanda.

– Leave a sentence that might inspire other participants around the world to join the event.

Keep cycling, meet new friends, push your limits, conserve the environment while staying healthy!

– Do you have any idea how many kilometers you’ve already cycled? Do you count? Or did you just let yourself go?

I would guess slightly over 10000Kms. I have 6000Kms of those recorded since I joined Strava.

Douwe Baas – Netherlands

– How long have you been cycling?

As a Dutch guy I learned cycling already when I was only 5 years old. When I started to go to the high school I Had to cycle everyday about at least 12 km’s but when I wanted to visit some friends it was even 20 – 30 km’s a day. When I was 16 years old I had my first bike holiday and cycled with a friend of mine from the Netherlands to France. When I met my wife and we didn’t have too much money so we made our first bicycle holiday together in 1981 and travelled in cycled 9 days through the North-eastern part of the Netherlands, see Polarsteps . Now I’m 67 years old and my wife and I bought electric bikes 3 years ago, Because of Corona we decided to go fot another bicycle holiday in 2020 and cycled 9 days along the border of Overijssel (the province in the Netherlands where we live). Also that is on Polarsteps.

– How did you get your taste for cycling?

I always have loved cycling. It gives a feeling of freedom to go where you want to go. I always like hiking that gives the same feeling but the distance per day are shorter.

– What gives you the most satisfaction when you ride your bicycle?

Feeling close to nature and meeting people in an easy way.

– What beautiful part of your country would you like to show at the Bike4tourism event?

The north-eastern part of Overijssel, the province in the Netherlands I live in. In that part live a few glass artists and a bicycle tour is made along these artists https://www.komoot.nl/tour/343416075?ref=wtd

– Which city(ies) or country(ies) would you like to visit or would you like to get to know through the photos shared on May 30th?

I’m interested in a lot of countries in the world. My wife and I are tour operators, selling self drive and camper tours in Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Madagascar) and my daughter and son in law are selling self-drive tours to Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States and also cruises to the Arctics. So a family with lots of interests in holiday destinations.

– Leave a sentence that might inspire other participants around the world to join the event.

Bike 4 Tourism is an event to enjoy cycling and show the places you love to the world.

– Do you have any idea how many kilometers you’ve already cycled? Do you count? Or did you just let yourself go?

How many km’s I have cycled in my life I really don’t know. In my youth I cycled about 3500 km’s a year and now as I am a pensioner I do the same distance in a year but in between I think I did only 500 km’s a year. So a total of about 50.000 km’s in my total life till now would be a global guess.

have been riding a bicycle since a child…many MANY years ago.

Satisfaction? I would say the fresh air, nature and the freedom to go places that would normally take too long to explore by foot. I get to enjoy the great outdoors without leaving a negative footprint.

– What beautiful part of your country would you like to show at the Bike4tourism event?

I hope to showcase some of beautiful Nova Scotia near Halifax. We are limited with where we can go due to Covid restrictions at the moment. If the weather cooperates I will ride some ocean seaside trails. If weather is not favourable then I will explore some forest trails with scenic vistas.

– Which city(ies) or country(ies) would you like to visit or would you like to get to know through the photos shared on May 30th?

I have had the pleasure of cycling the Rhine River through 5 countries in Europe. I would really love a similar trip anywhere!

– Leave a sentence that might inspire other participants around the world to join the event.

A statement? Cycling is so much fun! You do not require any high end super expensive equipment! Cycling is great exercise that just about anyone can do at their own pace. Get out and enjoy some fresh air. We all live in beautiful places. We only need to get out and look.

– Do you have any idea how many kilometers you’ve already cycled? Do you count? Or did you just let yourself go?

I like to create a basic video that will show my track and display a few photos. In the past 2 months I have cycled approximately 500 km…just exploring and having fun.

– How long have you been cycling?

I have been cycling since I was young but took up serious cycling only when I decided to do triathlon more than 20 years ago

– How did you get your taste for cycling?

It was an activity that got us around the neighbourhood when we were young. It was a natural activity for us. But as an adult, it was part of my interest in triathlon. From there, I have explored cycling in Europe (Nice & Zurich), and was a part of a team in 2018 that cycled from the west of South Africa (Cape Town) to the east (Pietermaritzburg) covering 1700km in 10 days. It was called the Unogwaja Challenge.

– What gives you the most satisfaction when you ride your bicycle?

Be able to go new places that we do not normally get to see when you take other transport, and feel the breeze when I ride, and closer to nature when I go to the beach or forest

– What beautiful part of your country would you like to show at the Bike4tourism event?

The nature reserves, beaches, the reservoirs, and also the gardens in our city

– Which city(ies) or country(ies) would you like to visit or would you like to get to know through the photos shared on May 30th?

Mostly European countries (Central, Eastern & the Scandinavian countries), East Asia (like Japan & Taiwan), Australia & New Zealand. If I do a bike ride in the USA, it will be the mountain regions on the west coast.

Somesh Shah – Thailand

– How long have you been cycling?

Since Childhood maybe around 30 years… 🙂

– How did you get your taste for cycling?

I have been riding a bicycle since Childhood. It used to be so much fun to ride with my friend gang. We used to go anywhere..into the woods, small narrow alleys, to the shopping centres, to birthday parties…so many places. As I grew up, I realised, this is one thing which has so many benefits… It is not slow as running …and not fast and dangerous as motorised bikes…It gives the pleasure of freedom, having good health, and no pollution at all…that made me adapt this in my daily routine now. I really want to promote riding bicycles in the city, so that people can adopt this in their everyday routine works.

– What gives you the most satisfaction when you ride your bicycle?

Freedom and doing something for my health.

– What beautiful part of your country would you like to show at the Bike4tourism event?

I am basically from India, but I have been living in Thailand for more than three years now. Thailand has become my second home now. I will showcase the beautiful city places of Bangkok City to the world. Since Tourism is badly affected due to the Covid scenario, my small contribution through this event might help the local Tourism business in the long run.

– Which city(ies) or country(ies) would you like to visit or would you like to get to know through the photos shared on May 30th?

I would like to get to know about Japan, Korea, Turkey and other Bicycle friendly countries. I have a desire to at least visit such countries and do my ride around.

– Leave a sentence that might inspire other participants around the world to join the event.

Contribute something for your country, your place where you live. This is one opportunity. Aspire. Act. Achieve.

– Do you have any idea how many kilometers you’ve already cycled? Do you count? Or did you just let yourself go?

I am using Strava since January 2021. and since then I have bicycled around 550Kms inside the city.
